The Wish To Be a Red Indian
If one were only an Indian, instantly alert, and on a racing horse, leaning against the wind, kept on quivering jerkily over the quivering ground, until one shed one’s spurs, for there needed no spurs, threw away the reins, for there needed no reins, and hardly saw that the land before one was smoothly shorn heath when horse’s neck and head would be already gone.

Gold Coast, Australia
What do I have left to say about this place…
After 3 and a half years of photographing, researching, reliving all the things that haunt me, confronting the absurdity of a reality that speaks of a sun-drenched paradise on one side and a suffocating terror on the other.
Now, as I approach the end of this project, soon to become a book, I am beset with a need to take stock. It began with a confusion, a need to understand the amalgamation of blind feeling that propelled me back to my hometown. It continued with a journey of catharsis that meandered through a twisting road of rage, despondency, resignation, bitter humor, nostalgia and the occasional doubting of my sanity.
It ends with a quiet anxiety. Where do I go from here and am I really done with it? Have I truly photographed all the things that I wanted to show to the outside world? Have I collected enough evidence to preserve this place in pages for me to close and place on a shelf, along with the other tomes of humanity and disaster that I know exist and yet am loathe to read?
These questions will never have a definitive answer and sooner or later I will put them to rest with all the small actions that mark the end of such endeavors. Negotiations with graphic designers, final approvals on PDFs, standing on the floor of the printing press, consignment forms, book signings. The silent stare of an audience that will either see the lie of a place built on poor and vain dreams fed by malnourished minds, or perhaps wonder what all the fuss is about. Such a lovely place to live, look at the blue, blue sky!
